Are you living your values?

March 21, 2014

Have you ever thought about what is important deep down inside you?

What sort of personal qualities you want to cultivate?

How you want to interact with other people both your family and professionally as well as with yourself?

Answering these questions will give you a hint about what your personal values are, and the good news is, that there are no wrong answers.

Values are our leading principles which can guide and motivate us as we live our life. Values are not the same at goals, instead they can be seen as a direction which we keep moving in.

A value is like heading North whereas goals are the waypoints, streets or towns we pas on our way North.

Goals can be achieved whereas values are an ongoing process. For instance a goal could be to become manager which can be achieved and crossed off, whereas fully applying yourself at work, being aspirational and motivating as a leader are values.

If you stop living the values and moving in the direction of fully applying yourself, being aspirational and motivating, then you are no longer fully applying yourself, being aspirational or motivating.

However, once you have achieved your goal of being a manager, you are a manager even if you are doing a poor job.

- At least for a while you are.

So, the question is: What are your highest priorities in life?

The following are examples of areas of life which you might value.

Take a moment to think about each one in terms of general life directions, to get a heads up on whether you are living in accordance with your personal values.

What do you value in your work? What sort of work relations would you like to build? What would make your work more meaningful to you?

Personal relations:

What du you value in spending time with others? What value do you want others to gain from spending time with you?

Health and physical well-being:

What are your values related to maintaining your physical well-being? How do you want to look after your health, with regard to sleep, exercise, smoking, alcohol etc.?

Living in accordance with your values will to a higher extent make you feel like the Captain and not merely a Passenger in your own life.

That is why taking a few moments once in a while to make sure you're on the right path in life, will be a great investment in your overall well-being.
